Maria Martins began her artistic studies among various studios in the 1920s and 1930s.
Producing powerful sculptures at the same time linked to modernism and inspired by
Amerindian and Afro-Brazilian mythology, she establishes herself as the central figure of the movement
Surrealist in New York, holding important solo shows in the years 1941 and
1946 and establishing dialogues with Marcel Duchamp and André Breton. Returning to Brazil
In 1949, Martins organized his first major exhibition in the country and acted decisively
at the 1st São Paulo International Biennial, receiving the first prize
placed in sculpture in the third edition of the exhibition.
