CONVENTO DA GRAÇA HOSTS THE EXHIBITION “ANNUNCIATION”
INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART IN DIALOGUE WITH TRADITION
AND PORTUGUESE HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE

OPENING ON NOVEMBER 4, AT 12 P.M.
Starting next November 4th, the Convento da Graça, a historic landmark
from Lisbon, hosts “ANNUNCIATION”, an exhibition that brings together 23 international contemporary artists in a dialogue with the Portuguese identity, art and architecture of the building.
The exhibition occupies several spaces in the Convent with sculptures, paintings and multimedia installations, most of which were created specifically for the place

.

The building, which has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries and is one of the most impressive convent ensembles in the country, continues to mark the landscape
of the city. The encounter between heritage and contemporary artistic creation is one of the axes of the exhibition

.

Xavier Auza, artistic director and responsible for organizing the exhibition, describes it as “a love letter to Lisbon”. Organized in 8 sections, the exhibition proposes a reading of the city on a global scale, presenting Lisbon as a
metropolis where people of different nationalities and beliefs live together. Through the works, the participating artists address the diversity and possibilities of
encounter between different realities in a universe guided by Light.

Among the site-specific works are “Demanding Souls”, a large sculptural installation by the German Thomas Schönauer, which occupies the Cloister; “The Messiah”, a large format painting by the Brazilian Leandro Júnior, presented in the Sacristy area; “Lichem Rosa”, stoneware and steel sculpture by Argentinian Leo Battistelli, installed in the Chapel; and “Kay’ítchigu (Final Transformation) IV”, painting
in large format by the Brazilian indigenous artist Kuenan Mayu, exhibited

in the Upper Cloister.

The exhibition also includes works by two leading names in 20th century art: the Italian Ettore Spalletti and the American Louise Fishman. The itinerary also includes the work of artists with a prominent presence in the current art scene, such as the Brazilians Paulo Pasta, Flávio Cerqueira, João Trevisan and the Spanish Karlos Gil.
Also participating are André Miagui, Anthony Mazza, José Spaniol, Julia Pereira, Letitia Quesenberry, Lidia Lisbôa, Luiza Gottschalk, Natalia Ivanov, Nathan Kunigami, Rosângela Dorazio, Senk, Shen

Wei and Yasmin Guimarães.

Curators, collectors, gallerists and journalists and other global art professionals were invited to write short essays about the participating artists and their respective works. Among them are Simon Watson, Alvin Hall, Katia d’Avillez, and Francisco Fino. The texts will be available for consultation at the exhibition venue and will later be published in the catalog.

The exhibition will be open until March 28, 2027 and will be accompanied by a program of music, dance, poetry and cinema. On the opening day, the program
kicks off with “Essay for All”, an educational project by Capella de S. Vicente that promotes choral formation and the teaching of music to children and young people in a school context. There will also be a live set by DJ Caztilla on the terrace of the Church of Grace in the Convent

.

The exhibition can be visited daily, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except on days of
Christmas and New Year’s
